52 students from the U.S. and 30 students from abroad are wrapping up their intensive six-week research projects at the 2019 Research Science Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This year’s program concludes on August 4th with awards going to the top five written papers and oral presentations. In addition to intensive study and research, attending students have had the privilege of listening to guest lecturers from MIT, Harvard, and industry and also met with admissions counselors from 20 top colleges from across the country. Check out the CEE Facebook page for pictures from this year’s program. Students interested in applying for RSI 2020 program can find more information on the RSI Program webpage.

The 2019 USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) National Finals was hosted by UC San Diego at the end of June. Nearly 10,000 students from 498 schools and 45 states registered for the 2019 competition. TEP wrapped up the 2018-2019 school year with a half-day workshop in Norfolk, VA on June 24th. This year’s workshop, Engaging Students in STEM: Hands-On Learning and Real World Applications, featured key note speaker Dr. Steve Fein, an oncologist, in addition to speakers from KCI Technologies and DE Himberger consulting. Representatives from a number of organizations provided hands-on activities and resources for the teachers. Videos, slides, and supporting resources are now posted on the TEP Lab Bench to access and use as you plan for the new school year.

Mark your calendars!  TEP will be returning to Northern California, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia this fall.  See the Bite of Science and Teacher Roundtable pages for the latest schedule and registration information. Don’t forget: CEE is here to connect you with speakers and organizations to support you in the classroom. Please get in touch with Kim Edwards, CEE’s Education Programs Outreach Manager, if you’d like to be connected to scientists or engineers to visit your classroom, provide additional resources, or assist with student projects.
